Violence in Entertainment – Does Media Affect Our Thoughts? pt. 1

Think you think for yourself?
Well, think again.

Media is everywhere, from advertisements, to social links, news segments, video games, etc. Do we even have time to think for ourselves?

When I was younger, I used to think that all the people that claimed that violence on t.v., movies, music, etc. made an impression on us, were ridiculous. I ardently believed that people were conscious enough to come to their own decisions and thought patterns, and ridiculed those that speculated otherwise.

Perhaps that was me jumping on the bandwagon of mocking the alleged “conspiracy theorists”. Calling them crazy and uninformed.

Well who's laughing now?

(Well, I suppose it’s no laughing matter, but at least I’ve finally come to the realization that I was wrong.)

Before I delve in, what do you think? Are you here on this page because you believe the same thing? Or are you here because you think it’s a ridiculous concept like I once did?

Expanding Awareness Relations

If you’ve read my previous posts: How do we Find the Truth? and When News Media Lies, you already know about the levels of deception and manipulation that these “sources” have propagated to the population. (With the help of the CIA, I might add.)

So is it that much of a stretch to contemplate on this idea?

If that’s not enough of a reason, I will be addressing other points that might provide a little more insight into this kind of “mind control” programming. This is part 1 of a 10 part series, starting with “Violence in Entertainment”.

Pt. 1: Violence in Entertainment -

From everything such as t.v., movies, music, video games... watching violent movies, shows, playing violent video games, or listening to hate-filled music has inspired some horrible crimes.

It’s no surprise that violence in entertainment is on this list. Whether people have been inspired to commit horrible crimes due to scenes they’ve seen on the big screen, or whether they wanted to duplicate the actions of their favorite video games. Being compelled by an outside source into acts of violence can certainly interfere with the mind.

One thing (out of many) that we need to take into account are who these individuals are, and what kind of lifestyle they were in.

How true is nature vs. nurture?

Well, for starters, there are scientific studies into various genes, such as the “warrior gene (MOAO)”, which allegedly predisposes you to be naturally more violent.

Now imagine (if these studies are fact) that a person carrying the warrior gene not only grew up as a young child watching and playing all these violent video games and movies, but also lacking proper supervision and guidance? Even if a child didn’t have this warrior gene, watching non-stop videos or playing games of violence with guns and knives and murder is bound to corrupt the child.

A geneticist, Dean Hamer, allegedly discovered the “God gene”, which can help determine how spiritually sound one is, and the “gay gene”, which obviously is to determine if someone is more likely to prefer the opposite gender.

There was also a video (hotly debated as to it’s authenticity) which showed a presentation at the pentagon that proposed a “Funvax” – a vaccine which would suppress this gene; making people lose their belief in God – specifically targeting the “religious fanatics”, as the presenter stated. You can watch the video here.

Rudolph Steiner, a well-known philosopher back in the early 1900’s, was talking about this very agenda over 100 years ago. – source

Honestly, this topic is a fascinating study into our mind, body, and the potential implications it has on our soul. There have also been contested issues about using us without our knowledge into manipulating our genetic make-up; thereby taking away our free will to live as we were created to.

The ways “they” have proposed to do this (if not already have and possibly still doing)? Using vaccines, as the aforementioned video states, medication, chem trails, gay bombs – (yes, the pentagon actually pushed for this idea), and microchips – implanted into the mind and/or body.

Are you okay with having your body and mind manipulated against your will? Are we sure they’re not doing these things already?

The psychological make-up of some do raise up the issue that, perhaps the people that are committing crimes due to “entertainment”, have some sort of mental health issues already. It has been implied that those that try and duplicate video game violence already have a history of abuse and violence. Either as the perpetrator, or the receiver. Perhaps even both.

Which begs the question… if that’s the case, then why are they allowed to play such violent video games in the first place? Or watch violent movies? Aren’t there tv, movie, video game ratings that help people in determining what may be suitable for a child/teen/adult? Maybe part of the problem is that adults don’t necessarily adhere to these recommended ratings.

This isn’t mentioned to condemn anyone. And perhaps some people still don’t believe that media can influence someone. But there are multiple studies that would prove otherwise.

Personal Experience

And I, myself, highly regret making some of the choices I have made with my then 8-year old child. Taking him to a PG-13 movie, which you wouldn’t think is that bad, but this particular movie gave him nightmares. And not only that, he was also stressed that he may act out in a violent manner. Which is incredibly heartbreaking for any parent to hear. You can imagine my deep guilt and grief for seeing him struggle with such a dilemma.

Imagine that. An 8-year old, making the consciously aware confession that he’s afraid he’ll do something violent. (All from watching a PG-13 movie.) I was devastated, and made amends immediately to shower him with reassurance and love and support. Thankfully, he grew out of this phase. But it was certainly terrifying for a moment.

(And I didn’t even mention the fact that a family member was going to let my son (at 9) play GTA V… – I DON’T THINK SO.)

Other questions we must ask are: are they being abused? Physically, mentally, verbally? If so, by who and why hasn’t it stopped? And again, even if they were “wired wrong to begin with”, as one article put it, and that’s why they were so impressionable with a video game, then it is still pointing to them being affected by the game.

What if they had never been exposed to these violent scenes? What if, instead, they grew up in a loving environment, never being abused, and not corrupted by society’s sometimes twisted view into conformity?

Then we have the fact that most studies have shown that an average time a child/teen spends in front of a television set (watching movies, shows, playing video games, etc.) is around 6 and a half hours. I think most of us can agree that a child (especially at such a young age) is extremely impressionable and likely to duplicate what they see on television or on video games.

Without proper guidance, these same children will not know that the actions depicted on screen is very different than that of real life. Plus take into account that by watching so much violence and cruelty in the first place, has actually been linked to desensitization and apathy.

Add that to all the negativity we see on the big screen, which has allegedly had a hand in influencing some heinous crimes, and it makes one wonder if people are as in control of what they think… as they think they are.

What About Music?

Music also has a link in consciously affecting us. Perhaps even in a subliminal way that we’re not even aware of at the moment.

I’m sure there have been instances where you’ve heard a song, tons of times, but one day, out of the blue, the lyrics just HIT you. Even though you’ve sung the song multiple times before. You may not have even realized what you were singing.

It’s amazing what having a child will make you aware of. For some people, that is. Some are still unaware of the ramifications that media can have on their child; or on themselves, for that matter.

I came to this harsh realization, not only with the PG-13 example I mentioned above, but also another time while sitting at a restaurant. They were playing “Loser”, by Beck.

I knew this song; even sung the lyrics here and there when I was younger. But never did the full implications of the lyrics hit me than it did while sitting at that restaurant with my 5 year old son while waiting for food. I was almost in disbelief that they would play that song. A family establishment. And let me get this straight. I never had any issues with that song before. But while listening to the lyrics:

“With the rerun shows and the cocaine nose-job”

“He hung himself with a guitar string”

and, of course, the popular chorus line:

“I’m a loser baby, so why don’t you kill me?

I was suddenly acutely aware of the words.

Now you may argue that with my son being 5 he most likely wouldn’t understand those lyrics. And even if I agreed with you, that still wouldn’t excuse this establishment from playing this song. Perhaps they were, also, blissfully unaware of the connotations that media can impose on the mind. (And it’s not only the weak-minded.)

But I would also propose that they knew exactly what they were doing. After all, having a family member that used to work in fast food, they were specifically given a tape of music to play for their customers that played the same set of songs, over and over and over again.

(More marketing and advertisement schemes? Perhaps. Only those at the “top” know for sure.)

Regardless of the intentions, or lack thereof, the fact of the matter remained. I was uncomfortable with my son overhearing that song. Perhaps you may think I’m being too sensitive. But I submit that we’re not being sensitive enough.

There’s another aspect that it is not the music itself that drives one to suicide or violence. Perhaps people that are already in that mindset seek out these kind of music, instead of the music influencing their thoughts.

That could be the case. But I would also argue that if that is true, then the people who seek out this type of music certainly don’t help their own awareness in getting out of their negative mentality. If anything, it would only exacerbate it.

Perhaps we should look to ourselves to make the conscious decision to not listen to these types of music; or at least have a well-grounded view and control over our own thoughts before we do.

(On a personal note, I love some rock music. But I am aware of the affects it can have on my mentality, much less that of a young child or teen. One of my good friends was obsessed with Avenged Sevenfold’s I won’t See You Tonight Parts 1 and 2. He was always depressed. Was he depressed because he was listening to these sad, tragic songs? Or was his depression attracting him to listen to these types of music?)

As we will see in future parts to this series, media definitely does not only affect children. In part 2, I tackle the effect that news media has on our minds, from political propaganda to encouraging riots and division. In part 3, I address the sad hold that media addiction can have over us.

Stay tuned.
